Study Summary
The trial seeks to determine if apixaban, an investigational anticoagulant (blood-thinner) is as effective as standard therapy (warfarin) in preventing stroke and systemic embolism in subjects with atrial fibrillation and risk factors for stroke.
Primary Outcome
All suspected efficacy events were adjudicated by the Central Events Committee (CEC). Diagnosis of stroke=the nontraumatic focal neurological deficit lasting at least 24 hours, and includes ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke with hemorrhagic conversion, stroke of uncertain type, and retinal ischemic event (embolism, infarction). Diagnosis of SE=clinical history consistent with an acute loss of blood flow to a peripheral artery (or arteries), supported by evidence of embolism fr
