Study Summary
RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of high dose chemotherapy plus peripheral stem cell transplantation followed by combination chemotherapy in treating patients with metastatic prostate cancer that has not responded to hormone therapy.
