CO-creating Novel, Feasible, and Inclusive Research Methods
NCT07489144 · View on ClinicalTrials.gov ↗
Study Summary
The lessons we learn and evidence we discover from research studies are limited by who volunteered as participants in each research study. Currently, research studies do not represent the full diversity of the American people. Community engagement is one method to increase research participation. But, there is a lack of evidence for recommending a particular level of community engagement over others. Our team of scientists, physicians, and community members developed an innovative approach to increase full participation of participants in research studies. The proposed project, Co-creating Novel, Feasible, and Inclusive Research Methods (CONFIRM), is designed to test if we can increase research participation by creating methods in partnership with the research participants themselves. As our team has conducted research around breast cancer, we have repeatedly encountered Black women who see the importance of the overall topic and want to help people like them. But when they hear about what exactly they have to do as part of the study, they do not volunteer. We want to change that. We plan to recruit participants to answer research questions, and then with those volunteers, we will decide together on the tasks and activities volunteers will complete in the study. In contrast to how we usually do science, this innovative approach switches the order of design and participant recruitment. We enroll and engage volunteers before methods are selected. We engage research participants as "co-researchers." This word emphasizes the act of carrying out research with/by participants who are not professional researchers, instead of to/about/for them. We propose that participants will design a method that is acceptable, feasible, and relevant to themselves and their community. We will recruit 240 participants from community sites, such as health fairs, retail stores, churches, and schools, who will be divided into two groups based on where they signed up for the study. Full Details on ClinicalTrials.gov ↗What the Registry Record Tells You About NCT07489144
The ClinicalTrials.gov registry entry for NCT07489144 describes a study currently listed as active not recruiting. It is categorized as NA, which is the standard way researchers label where a study sits along the investigational pathway from early safety work through later efficacy and post-marketing evaluation. The registered enrollment target is 240 participants, a figure that helps gauge the scale of data the investigators plan to collect. The listed sponsor is Augusta University, which has 126 total studies on file at ClinicalTrials.gov, and sponsors are the parties responsible for study design, oversight, and regulatory filings.
The record links to 1 condition, with Research Participation appearing as the primary indexed condition, and to 1 intervention — of which Participant co-design is the first listed. Interventions can include drugs, devices, procedures, behavioral programs, or observational arms, and each is tracked as a separate registry field so that downstream queries can filter accurately. When a trial lists multiple interventions, it usually reflects a multi-arm design or a comparison protocol rather than a single treatment being tested in isolation. The brief summary published in the registry is the clearest source of protocol intent and should be read before drawing conclusions from any sidebar tags.
Geographic footprint matters for practical reasons: NCT07489144 reports 1 study location spanning 1 distinct geographic area — top geographies include Georgia. A larger site network tends to correlate with broader recruitment capacity, but it does not imply anything about study quality, and site-level enrollment status can diverge from the overall registry status shown above.
